Reviews of the Best Hunting Duffle Bag
First Up: the ALPS OutdoorZ High Caliber Duffel is seriously, a high-caliber duffel. It comes in three sizes, with the Large offering 6300 cubic inches of storage (massive!) while still only weighing two pound, as it is made from ultra-durable but ultra-light 600D Realtree Edge fabric.
It has one large main compartment, with a #10 zipper, two side pockets, front and end pockets, and more than enough storage for just about hunting trip. Grab handles make it accessible, while the padded shoulder strap is good for carrying on longer trips. All that, and it’s super durable.
One thing we would like to see is structuring or rigidity; instead of staying open when empty, it just lays flat on the ground, which can make packing hard.
Other than that, this is one serious bag, and it’s ready to rock. It’s our Top Pick for a duffel, as it is still super-inexpensive, and comes in three versatile sizes.
- Three sizes - Large is 6300 cubic inches
- 600D Realtree Edge build is super-durable
- Plenty of pockets and storage
- High quality
- No structure
- No Shape
Next up, is the NPUSA 26” Duffle bag. With 3800 cubic inches of interior space and tons of pockets inside and out, it’s built from 600D polyester fabric, and you can feel the rugged construction upon picking it up it weighs a hefty 3.4 pounds. It even has a PVC lining on the inside to keep water out and your stuff dry.
As mentioned, this duffle bag is built for anything, with 6 exterior pockets and a wide array of attachment points: MOLLE webbing, d-rings, buckle snap straps. You can grab it with the Velcro grab handles or sling it over your shoulder with the heavy-duty shoulder strap.
With that said, there a few places the construction fails – such as the zippers. They’re just cheap and not up to par with the seemingly rugged bag. Some of the detailing and stitching is bit weak, and it gives out with tons of wear.
So, it’s a great choice if you like a ton of options but isn’t the most durable bag – or even the most spacious. And the waterproof PVC lining is a great feature.
- Tons of pockets
- 3800 Cubic Inches
- Waterproof PVC lining
- Tons of attachment points
- Weak stitching
- Cheap zippers
- Heavy for size
The NPUSA 22” offers the same features and construction as the 26” version, but in a smaller and lighter package. The 22” size offers 2640 cubic inches of space and weighs only 3 pounds – a whopping half a pound less than the larger counterpart. It is, likewise, made from 600D Polyester and features a PVC lining to keep your stuff dry.
It has all the same attachment options and MOLLE Webbing, the 6 exterior pockets for stashing all your hunting gear. Another thing worth mentioning is the sheer amount of color options you have. It comes in everything from Coyote Tan to Pink Camo.
Again, the major downsides to the NPUSA bags are the weak stitching, poor build quality and cheap zippers. Which is too bad, because the design is great, and the fabric is pretty thick on its own.
If they got those things fixed up, this would be an excellent choice for a smaller, lighter duffel bag that still offers tons of storage and tons of functionality.
- 600D Poly build
- Waterproof PVC lining
- 2640 cubic inch capacity
- Tons of colors
- Tons of pockets
- Weak zippers
- Bad stitching
Looking for a cheap, tough bag with a good amount of storage? Don’t need a lot of features? The Hauler Bag from Allen will get the job done. It’s made from a tough Endura outer shell, with a super simple, streamlined design. But the Medium measures 12”x12”x24”, for a full 3400 cubic inches of storage in one large compartment. There is one zippered side pocket for stashing quick-grab items.
You can grab it from the reinforced side carry handles, or you can use the padded, removable shoulder straps to throw it on and get moving on the trail. It’s super light at only 2 pounds, and very affordable priced.
Sure, it doesn’t have all the features that other bags have, but for this price, who’s complaining? It makes a great budget buy.
- 3400 Cubic Inches of Space
- Simple design
- Reinforced carry handles, padded shoulder pad
- Not many exterior pockets
Another super simple duffel bag. This bad boy is made from 600D laminated Endura, measures 13”x29”x13” for a total of 4000 cubic inches. That’s a lot of storage! It also has a reinforced bottom for added durability.
There are 2 side pockets for storing wet items, as well as a zippered front document pocket, for plenty of exterior storage. And there are side support handles and a 2” padded adjustable shoulder strap for throwing over your shoulder as you hike out to the hunt.
Sadly, it just isn’t up to par quality-wise. Like the NPUSA duffel bags, the Late Leaf duffel can be poorly put together in some places, with poor stitching and cheap zippers. This means it won’t hold up particularly well for rugged trips into the woods.
It’s a huge that stores all your gear and is super easy to carry, but don’t be surprised if it gets damaged.
- 4000 Cubic Inches of Space
- 600D Laminated Endura Build
- Simple design
- Poor Stitching
- Cheap zippers
What To Look For In the Best Hunting Duffle Bag
Size And Capacity
This is probably the most important consideration. How large is it, and how much of your gear can it fit? You’ll find bags ranging in size, anywhere from 2000 over 6000 cubic inches (32 to 98 liters!) Between 2000 and 4000 will be enough for most people; 3000 cubic inches (49L) will generally be perfect. But if you have more gear – bigger can be helpful!
What kind of fabric is the bag made of? Is it durable? Thick? Most bags will be made of a 600-denier nylon or polyester shell, which is more than tough enough to handle any amount of gear, abrasions, tears, etc.
Sometimes, however, cheaper bags will try to cut corners on their stitching and fabric quality, leading to a cheaply-made bag. Pay attention to reviews on the bag you’re buying to avoid this.
Weight will be a function of size, capacity and fabric – but a super heavy bag will also be annoying to carry around with you everywhere. Larger and heavier bags can easily get up to 3 or 4 pounds – heavy for a bag. The lighter the bag you can find, the more comfortable you’ll be.
This is certainly not necessary in a duffle bag, but it’s a nice thing to have. Most 600D fabric will already be water-resistant if you aren’t dunking it in anything, but if the bag has a PVC-lining or waterproof membrane – you’ll be even better off. It will probably cost more, too.
Does the bag have a structure and some shape? Or is it unstructured? Structured bags are a lot easier to use, as they stay open as you take things in and out. Unstructured duffels just lay flat without anything in them, which can be harder to load. Not necessarily an important factor in choosing a bag, but something to keep in mind.
The Final Word
Our favorite hunting duffle bag is the Alps Outdoorz High Caliber Duffel. It’s inexpensive, comes in 3 huge sizes (the large is 6300 cubic inches, and the XL over 10,000), and is made with a 600D Realtree fabric that is tough and abrasion-resistant – as well as having a nice camo fabric that blends in well. It would be nice if it was structured, to make packing it easier, but for a durable duffle with tons of storage capacity, you can’t go wrong. It also has a Lifetime Warranty from ALPs Outdoorz.
Our Budget Buy Option is the Allen Hauler bag, which has 3400 cubic inches of space and an Endura shell that can withstand most hunting conditions and outdoor expeditions.
